Quickie: Tips to make Photoshop love you more

Mar 02

So recently on GraphicRiver, a forum thread came up that basically outlined the following: “PHOTOSHOP IS SO SLOW WHY GOD WHY?” In further investigation the author did admit he had some aging hardware, which really should be addressed.

For those of us – myself included – that cannot simply afford to drop good coin on a 9-dimensional quantum quad core extreme dx processor, 5 gigatonne atomic video card, and RAM the equivalent size and girth of China, we have to make do with what little things we can.

In this case I’ve come across a selection of little tweaks you can do to speed up Photoshop. Maybe not by a massive amount, but when you’re used to 10 seconds of lag, taking a couple seconds off that can make a huge difference. To your sanity, and to the survival of you and those near by.

And so I’ve opted to take them from that forum and post the tips here, complete with screenshots. I apologize in advance as these screens are done on my mac. The concepts should still be the same though.

Come on, it’s only been one… two… three.. fou–well damn. I am lazy.

You know, every time I have one of these impromptu hiatuses – hiatusi? hiatusae? – I always try and recall just what caused me to stop posting. It’s not like I was posting every other day and got burnt out, no no, I was posting once a week. But of course the cycle dies off and you end up with what, a five month break in posts?

That’s not kosher.

The irony is that if I had just managed to keep up with my weekly posting, I would probably have a more complete list of things that I have actually done. It’s a self-defeating cycle of suck, and I seem to really enjoy the ride. Never mind that I ride it in a busted up canoe, or that the ride takes me through a course that would make most white-water rafting professionals crap themselves just a little. I do it for the thrill.

Alright that may have sounded a tad insane, but I was on a roll and went with it.

So as stated it’s been a good 5 months since my last post, and I’ve got no good explanation for the break in content. I did just get back into school and I did start applying myself more for freelance stuff, but that’s hardly an excuse. Regardless, I’m back on the horse for now, and I’m feeling if not inspired, than at least motivated. To kick things off, I’ll give a quick rundown of everything that’s been going on with me recently.

I swear I’m not that self-involved. No, really I’m not. I am not a self-centered arrogant prat! Good god, you kiss your mother with that mouth? That’s sick man. Sick.

My Trip to Japan

Jun 11

This post is coming to you at least two three months late, but hey, for at least one of those months I was rather busy with school. I don’t really have an excuse for the latter, but that’s just how it is.

Anyways, back in March, I was given a fantastic opportunity to visit Japan via a friend of mine. Given that it was a trip to frikkin’ Japan, I couldn’t possibly have said no. Had I known how long the flight was actually going to feel, I might have reconsidered. Going there took somewhere around 18 hours and coming back took almost 24. There’s nothing quite like an 8 hour layover to make you consider killing yourself and/or those around you.

Thankfully the Detroit International Airport has a fantastic massage parlor. Best 30 dollars I have ever spent.

I will also apologize in advance for the load of this page. I’ve got a bunch of photos in this one, so if it takes a while to load… well you’ll have to wait i guess! I’m going to note the numbers of the photos from my flickr just so you can sort of follow along.

In case you are too lazy to visit my flickr set, you can jump to the end of the post, where I have a lovely flash dohickey that will rotate through all of my photos.

8 Things I’ve learned from going back to school

Dec 18

So a while back I mentioned going back to school. In fact, I even recall writing a collection of articles all about the subject. I’m sure I’ve mentioned it in my twitter (or at the very least, bitched about it). Well unlike the real world, College gives you large, void-filled breaks between semesters. This allows people like me ample time to run out of excuses for things we should have either done, or been doing during the academic time frame.

In my case this revolves around:

  • My portfolio
  • Posts with real content
  • Reading books
  • Spending time with Theresa while she is down from that god-forsaken place North Bay.
  • Aimlessly trying to catch up on my games

Now since only a couple of those are actually proactive (I’ll leave you to decide which) I have to pick and choose what and when I do these things. What is the result? Well to give you a glimpse, it’s almost 2 AM as of the start of this post. This is after I applied to many, many bursaries through my school. Who knew that working two jobs wouldn’t be enough to actually stay out of debt? Guess I’ll have to get some more!

My financial woes are not what I plan to talk about today though. I plan to talk about what I can take away from my first semester.

Okay, technically this would be my seventh semester if you are counting the six from the last time I was in school. That is also part of this so read on!

Word association thingy.

Dec 04

Let’s have a little fun with this post. The idea came to me randomly through the evening, and by now it’s been stewing in my brain for just long enough to have it start to make sense. I could also be going a tad insane from school, but I have no way of proving that as of yet.

So here’s the idea: I’m going to pick a word at random, and then continue writing down all the words and first thoughts I have based on that word and everything that follows. Things may not actually follow in a fluid pattern. I’m sure this will be a clear window into the dark regions of my mind. To stop outside influences, I am performing this without any music, Television or other stimulus.

You’ve been warned.

P.S. I invite any and everyone to participate in the comments!

Indiana Jones!

Profanity?

Feb 04

Apparently where my friend works, my website was classed as “profanity” for a good long while, and only recently has it come off the list. Well then: Fuck.  Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. [...]
